Two Scout Leaders from Wrexham have completed a 100 mile cycle race through London and Surrey to raise money for the Scout Association

Christian Edwards, 40, and David Morris, 41, took part in the first ever Prudential Ride London Surrey 100. The route began at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, through central London over the Thames into the hills of Surrey before returning back to finish on the Mall.

Roads were especially for the event,Elevit.which saw 16,000 cyclists take on the challenge in a sport which has become increasingly popular since Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome won the Tour de France and Team GB’s medal haul at last summer’s Olympic Games.

David Morris said: “It was an incredible experience cycling with so many others and thousands of people cheering us on all the way. A year ago I was in London watching Bradley Wiggins win his cycling gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics.

“I took up cycling as a result Cherson TEC Printer but never dreamed I’d be cycling on the Olympic road race course myself 12 months later.

“I was surprised how hilly it was. I’ve been training on the Horseshoe Pass and over World’s End, but Leith Hill and Box Hill in Surrey were a real challenge, especially on such a hot day.”

Christian and David were cycling to raise money for the Scout Association, with funds going towards setting up new Scout groups in areas of the UK where kids desperately need direction in life, as well as helping young people with special needs or financial hardship access Scouting.

Christian Edwards said: “I’m grateful to the Scouts for getting me on the event. Almost 30,000 people applied who didn’t get a place so we were lucky to be able to take part. I had an amazing day.”

"However, thanks to the advice of my compatriot Amy Mbacke Thiam, who won the women's 400m gold in 2001, and who is here with me, I am getting used to the atmosphere and how to prepare for ."

All three Olympic medalists from the women's 400m hurdles made it through to the semi-finals.

Champion Natalya Antyukh, finished third in her heat, while silver medalist Lashinda Demus and Czech bronze medal winner Zuzana Hejnova, the fastest woman this season, also looked in good shape.

Likewise both of the favourites for the men's steeplechase had no problem in reaching Thursday's final.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion Ezekiel Kemboi coasted through his heat to finish second while his close friend and Olympic silver medalist Mahiedine Mekhissi of France posted the fastest time of 8min 15.43sec.
